changing a measure. >> complete bay area news coverage starts right now, this is ktvu channel 2 news at 6:00 p.m. >> good evening. hello. i am gasia mikalian. >> and i am frank somerville. >> that storm is come and gone and now people across the bay area are dealing with the damage left behind. we have live team coverage of the clean up. ktvu's robert handa is in the south bay but we begin with ktvu's lorraine blanco where officials reopened a school that suffered serious damage from the heavy rain. >> reporter: you are right. white hill middle school will reopen tomorrow, that decision was made here and as soon as we returned -- and students will return with quite a few changes. >> reporter: a crew spent the day and tonight power washing floors and windows and ripping out carpets. the weekend storm clogged a

culvert pushing rain water and debris dine the school in fairfax. teachers in four classrooms packed up, their students will share other rooms or have classes in the library. >> i am worried about the kids adapting. >> the classes are already crowded. >> reporter: they are? >> with the construction, they have a bunch of students in small buildings. they have to share classrooms now. >> the school has been under construction since the summer. workers are building new 7th and 8th grade wings and a new music complex. the four damaged classrooms will take two months to repair. lorraine blanco, ktvu channel 2 news. >> the road washed out by the weekend storm will remain closed till next spring, maybe

till next summer. heavy rain overwhelmed a culvert. the sink hole damaged a water main and several homes lost water service. they plan to redesign it to prevent another washout. crews are scrambling to make remares. ktvu's robert handa -- remares. >> ktvu's robert handa is live now in san jose. >> reporter: the lull between storms came in time for a lot of people repairing and cleaning up. we showed you the ice rink after reopening. and now it is filled with happy skaters. but some of the other projects may not go as smoothie. >> reporter: -- smoothly. >> reporter: crews are trying trying to salvage this road that collapsed. this shows one lane is now

missing. >> i am glad it didn't happen while i was driving. i left yesterday for work. came back and saw this. >> we are thankful nobody drove into it. >> reporter: they filled sand bags today. >> we had flooding in my house. drainage ditch couldn't handle all the rain. we needed to divert everything. we will have to go up and take care of that water. >> reporter: he also has damage piling up. he began repairing his roof after two trees fell on it but then discovered another tree. >> it was up against the house. and every heavy rain storm we have had, the tree started to lean over from the weight. >> reporter: tonight workers in the mountains are trying to stabilize that road, enough for commuters to use as a one lane

road tomorrow. but a full repair will take months. live in san jose, robert handa, ktvu channel 2 news. power has been restored to all but 1800 customers. pg&e has been working around the clock to get the lights back on. so far power has been restored to 339,000. leaving 1800 people without power tonight. a live look at san francisco. the wet weather is gone for now but more is expected tomorrow. coming up at 6:18 p.m. our chief meteorologist bill martin tells us which areas will get hit the hardest. oakland police arrested a suspect in a brutal attack of a teen girl with autism who was founds severely beaten. the victim's father said police

arrested a 36-year-old man. the 16-year-old victim walked away from the youth center last tuesday. she was found two days later on a muni bus. her father also believes she was sexually assaulted. >> by looking at my daughter, i know what happened. i know what happened. the police know what happened but the police aren't discussing it with me. >> police confirmed the arrest but not releasing any other details. school was locked down after gunfire broke out after 11:30 a.m. this morning. the lock down was lifted about 1:00 p.m. this afternoon. a school district spokesman said police said they happen investigating a home invasion. police detained one person. another school was locked down after police were called to the campus at 2:00 p.m. this afternoon.

teachers and staff had students stay inside classrooms till the lock down was over. police haven't released details. the oscar grant case back in court today. a san francisco court is considering civil lawsuits against johannes mehserle and two other bart officers. at issue is whether johannes mehserle has immunity in the civil lawsuit. it could take 2-6 months for the court to make a decision. on friday the supreme court is expected to announce whether it will review prop 8. supporters are appealing to the supreme court after the court of appeals declared it unconstitutional. if they dechain to hear the appeal same-sex marriage could resume within a few days. landlord cannot evict a medical marijuana dispensary

because of the crack down on marijuana clubs. they were thrown out of the building earlier this year. the ruling says the landlord cannot evict the club even though the u.s. attorney is threatening to sees the landlord's property. the newest members of the state ledge staters were sworn in today. ktvu's ken pritchett tells us how democrats plan to use their new power. >> reporter: with that the democrats super majority was set. one party rule. >> i believe that this is the end of one very difficult era in california and the beginning of a new and better era. >> reporter: democrats celebrated. republican still have a voice but no power. >> some call us the super

you are looking at a california highway patrol cruiser that rolled this morning during a chase. both officers suffered minor injuries. they were trying to arrest a person speeding on interstate 580 at 3:30 a.m. another set of officers arrested two suspects 20 minutes later. >> heavy snows closed a road into yosemite national park. both roads usually close in the late fall. they typically reopen when weather conditions allow in the spring. there was also a lot of snow in tahoe. 2-24 feet of fresh powder since last wednesday. squaw valley had to close down during the storm yesterday because the snow was too heavy.

will likely predict 75% accuracy of the precipitation that is likely to occur. >> reporter: scientists tell us knowing how much rain is coming enables them to predict which areas will flood. reporting live in san francisco, david stevenson, ktvu channel 2 news. los angeles mayor mayor antonio villaraigosa got involved in the labor dispute at the port of los angeles long beach. talks went nowhere over the weekend. mayor antonio villaraigosa wants around the clock bargaining with the help of a mediator. the city counsel will discuss a plan to sell a parcel of land to a developer. the parcel is under contract for almost $9 million. the buyer intends oo build 3 -- to build 350 high end

apartments there. it has come under criticism by residents who say the deal was done without enough input from the public. the trust act aims to limit the ability of california law enforcement agencies to enforce federal immigration laws. governor jerry brown vetoed the bill in september. >> we must make sure secure communities focuses on violent criminals, not on day labor workers. not on women who are victims of domestic violence. a gay teen who spoke out after being denied his eagle scout award was honored today in sacramento.

he invited him and his family to the opening legislative session. he was kicked out of the scouts, prompting a nationwide campaign. the national park service repainted graffiti which is a first. the tower was restored and repainted with weather resistant paint to protect the land mark but it covered up graffiti from 1969-1971. they repainted the graffiti to match the other message of peace and freedom. tracking showers over the next 36 hours. rainfall should start light in the north bay tomorrow but it will work its way south and will have an impact on the wednesday morning commute. the rest looks light. you can see the sweep going.
